Giving children a reason to read and create words.
Hideout: Early Reading makes use of blending and reading short vowel words within meaningful contexts. Interactive activities highlight a core of words that share a phonic pattern, and they provide meaning and purpose for reading and creating words.
Hideout has over 100,000 users, a five-star App Store rating, and is currently being expanded in collaboration with Tufts University and MIT Media Lab to be deployed to thousands of low-cost Android devices in developing countries.
Each phonic pattern is introduced in a song: "This is the letter 'o'... This is the letter 'p'... When you put them together... Here's the sound they make: They go, 'op', 'op', 'op'..."
"Drag each new letter to make a new word, and we'll use them to play a little game!"
"POP the POPcorn til it reaches the TOP of the bucket..."
Read a series of sentences about the activity...
